What changed for AP exams in 2026

Most of what has been written about this treats "digital" as though it changed the exam. It changed the room, the tools and the interface. Those are worth knowing precisely, and the rest is unchanged.

In short

The change is delivery, not content. AP exams are now taken in Bluebook — fully digital for most courses, hybrid for the maths and sciences, whose free-response answers are still handwritten in a paper booklet. What is assessed and the 1-5 score scale are unchanged. The differences worth preparing for are practical: a built-in Desmos calculator on the maths exams, provided scratch paper, and — on AP English Language and Literature — four multiple-choice answer options instead of five.

What did not change

The 1-5 score scale. A 4 means what it meant.
What is assessed. Course frameworks and the skills tested are not affected by the delivery change.
Handwritten free response on the maths and sciences. Hybrid exams kept the paper booklet — see which exams are hybrid.

What to do differently

Sit a full practice in Bluebook before exam day. The interface costs time the first time you meet it, and that time comes out of your exam.
On a hybrid exam, keep writing by hand. Typing practice does not prepare the thing that is scored.
On the maths exams, learn the built-in Desmos rather than assuming your own calculator habits transfer.
On AP English, four options changes the guessing arithmetic slightly in your favour — and rewards elimination more than it used to.

Do I still write free-response answers by hand?

On hybrid exams, yes — Biology, both Calculus exams, Chemistry, the Physics exams, Precalculus, Music Theory and the two economics exams handwrite free response in a paper booklet. On fully digital exams you type everything.

How many answer choices do AP multiple-choice questions have?

Four on AP English Language and AP English Literature, which reduced from five. Other courses follow their own course framework.

What device do I take an AP exam on?

Bluebook runs on a personal Mac or Windows laptop, an iPad, or a school-managed Chromebook.
