Which AP exams are fully digital, and which are hybrid

The mode decides how you should practise. If your free response is handwritten in a booklet, timed typing practice is preparing you for the wrong thing — and if it is typed, handwriting practice is.

In short

AP exams are digital, delivered through Bluebook in one of two modes. In a FULLY DIGITAL exam both the multiple-choice and the free-response answers are typed in Bluebook. In a HYBRID exam the multiple choice is answered in Bluebook and the free response is handwritten in a paper booklet that is returned for scoring. Four art and research courses are assessed by portfolio and have no Bluebook exam at all. Which mode applies is set per course, not per student.

The hybrid arrangement catches people out in one specific way: the question is on the screen and the answer is on paper, so you are reading in one place and writing in another for the whole free-response section. That is worth rehearsing once before it happens under time.

What the mode changes about preparing

  • Hybrid exams still need legible handwriting under time. The booklet is scored by a human reader.
  • Fully digital exams reward typing accuracy, and remove the handwriting-speed penalty some students carried for years.
  • A built-in Desmos calculator is available on the maths exams, and scratch paper is provided for every digital exam.
  • Content and the 1-5 score scale are unchanged. The delivery moved; the exam did not — see what did and did not change.

Frequently asked questions

Are all AP exams digital now?

AP exams are delivered digitally through Bluebook, either fully digital or hybrid. Four courses — 2-D Art and Design, 3-D Art and Design, Drawing and Research — are assessed by portfolio and have no Bluebook exam.

Which AP exams still have handwriting?

The hybrid exams: Biology, Calculus AB and BC, Chemistry, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Music Theory, Physics 1, Physics 2, both Physics C exams, and Precalculus. Their free-response answers are handwritten in a paper booklet.

What device do I use?

Bluebook runs on your own Mac or Windows laptop, an iPad, or a school-managed Chromebook.

Did going digital make AP exams harder?

The content assessed and the 1-5 scoring are unchanged. What changed is delivery — and for hybrid exams, that you type the multiple choice and still handwrite the free response.
