How to improve your SAT Math score

A section score is an average across four domains. Averages hide the thing you need to find.

Stop doing mixed practice. SAT Math has 44 questions across four domains, and a score sits where it does because of specific skills inside one or two of them — not because of "math" in general. Work by skill: find the domain losing you the most, practise its weakest skill until the mistake stops repeating, then move on. Algebra and Advanced Math carry the most questions, so effort there is usually worth more than effort spread evenly.

Why mixed practice stops working

A mixed set tells you a percentage. It cannot tell you that six of your eight misses were the same skill wearing different clothes, because the report is an average and an average is exactly the wrong instrument for finding a specific weakness. That is why scores plateau: the practice keeps measuring the problem instead of fixing it.

If your score moves by less than the section's own noise across three practice tests, more of the same practice will not move it either. The next gain comes from changing what you practise, not how much.

The four Math domains, and what is in each

Every skill above has its own page with worked questions. That is the level to practise at — "Algebra" is not a thing you can be weak at, but Systems of Linear Equations is.

The loop that actually moves a Math score

  1. Take one full section, not a setA section gives you enough items per domain to see a pattern. A ten-question set does not.
  2. Sort your misses by skill, not by topicTwo questions can both be "algebra" and fail for unrelated reasons. The skill is the unit that repeats.
  3. Take the skill with the most misses and work only itFiltered practice on one skill, until you can say what the question is testing before you start solving.
  4. Re-read every wrong answer's explanation, including the distractorsThe trap is usually the same trap. Naming it is what stops it — "I picked the value of x when it asked for 2x" is fixable; "careless" is not.
  5. Return to mixed practice only to re-measureMixed sets are the instrument, not the training. Use them between blocks of skill work, not instead of it.

Use the calculator the test gives you

Bluebook embeds a Desmos graphing calculator, available on the entire Math section, and a great many questions are faster graphed than solved. Candidates who treat Math as an algebra-by-hand section give away time they do not have.

  • Systems of equations: graph both, read the intersection.
  • Quadratics: graph it and read the roots or the vertex rather than factoring under time pressure.
  • "For what value of k...": a slider turns an algebra problem into a visual one.
  • Checking: graphing a result you got by hand takes seconds and catches sign errors.

What the adaptive format means for your effort

Math is two separately timed modules. Your performance on module 1 routes you to a module 2 that is, on average, harder or easier — and the section score reflects all the questions in both modules, not module 2 alone. So there is no question worth abandoning to "protect" a routing, and no module worth coasting through.

A common and costly misreading

The Digital SAT adapts per module, not per question. Nothing you do inside a module changes what that module asks you next, so the strategy is just: answer everything, and leave nothing blank.

What not to spend time on

  • Untimed practice, indefinitely. Useful while learning a skill, misleading as a measure of readiness.
  • Hardest-questions-only sets. Most points are lost on medium questions answered carelessly, not on the hardest ones.
  • Memorising formulas already given. The reference sheet is on screen throughout.
  • A no-calculator section. There isn't one. That was the paper SAT.

Does the second module decide my score?

No. The section score reflects all the questions in both modules. The routing changes the average difficulty of module 2, not which module counts.
