How do I set up a proportion?

Keep the same quantity in the same position on both sides — parts with parts, wholes with wholes — then cross-multiply.

What about a ratio of 3:5?

Those are parts, and the whole is 8. A question asking for the larger portion of 40 wants 25, not 5.
