The digital SAT has two sections, each split into two timed modules. Reading & Writing comes first — two 27-question modules of 32 minutes (54 questions, 64 minutes). Then a 10-minute break, then Math — two 22-question modules of 35 minutes (44 questions, 70 minutes). That's 98 questions in 2 hours 14 minutes, and each section's second module adapts to how you did on the first.

You move straight through, in this order. You can go back and forth within a module, but once a module ends it's locked — and it decides whether your next module is the harder or easier set.

What the structure changes

Three things to take from the format

The two-module shape isn't just trivia — it changes how each section is timed, scored and paced.

Adaptive

Module 1 is the same for everyone.

Both students start a section on identical questions. How you do there routes you into a harder or easier second module — which is what sets how high that section can score.

Pace

You get more time per question than before.

About 71 seconds each in Reading & Writing and 95 seconds in Math. That's roomier than the old SAT, but the clock still rewards a steady pace.

Scoring

Not every question counts.

Around 90 of the 98 are scored; the rest are unscored pretest questions mixed in. You can't tell which is which, so answer every one as if it matters.

Reading & Writing

Short passages, four domains

Every Reading & Writing question carries its own short passage — usually 25 to 150 words — so there's no long reading to manage. Questions are drawn from four official domains: Craft & Structure, Information & Ideas, Standard English Conventions, and Expression of Ideas, and they're loosely grouped by type as you move through a module.

Math: mostly multiple choice, some fill-ins

  • About three-quarters are multiple choice; the rest are fill-ins you type yourself.
  • A built-in graphing calculator is available the entire Math section.
  • A reference sheet of common formulas is always on screen.
  • Four domains: Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving & Data Analysis, Geometry & Trigonometry.
