Carnegie Mellon testing requirements change with the college you choose

For the current published first-year cycle, CMU does not use one university-wide testing rule. Computer Science requires SAT or ACT, five colleges are test flexible, and Fine Arts remains test optional with portfolio or audition requirements.

The School of Computer Science requires SAT or ACT. Engineering, Dietrich, Heinz Information Systems, Mellon College of Science and Tepper are test flexible, allowing several exam types. The College of Fine Arts is test optional and evaluates required creative materials.

Score interpretation

A university-wide score range hides program differences.

The 2024-25 CMU Common Data Set reports 1510-1560 SAT and 34-35 ACT middle 50% ranges among enrolled score submitters. Those figures combine a university with required, flexible and optional program rules.

Name the college.A School of Computer Science applicant and a College of Fine Arts applicant do not face the same test-completion rule.

School-specific decisions

CMU asks six different testing questions.

The right answer depends on program, credential, timing and how the result will be read.

SCS means SAT or ACT

The School of Computer Science has the narrowest testing route. Treat the score as required application infrastructure, then use coursework and technical work to show preparation beyond the number.

Engineering is flexible, not score-free

An Engineering applicant can satisfy testing with one of several accepted credentials. Compare whether an SAT/ACT profile or advanced subject exams better represent quantitative and scientific preparation.

SAT and ACT are not symmetric

CMU allows SAT superscoring but says it cannot accept superscored ACT results because of the composite score in the report. An ACT retake therefore needs a whole-composite plan, not only one isolated section.

Older tests carry less weight

CMU notes that testing taken far in advance of enrollment may be less representative. Results from 11th or 12th grade generally align more closely with the knowledge students bring to first-year courses.

Self-reporting reduces friction

Domestic and international applicants may self-report SAT or ACT results. Official reports are required only after admission and enrollment, so accuracy remains essential.

Program fit still controls

No score changes the fact that applicants apply to a specific CMU college. High school course requirements, creative evidence and academic interests should align with that destination.

CMU is unusually sensitive to program choice because School of Computer Science, the test-flexible colleges and College of Fine Arts do not share one rule. Before testing or submitting, confirm the named college, the application term and the exact credential types accepted for that route. A student using AP, IB, A-Level or another flexible option should verify whether predicted results are allowed and what final documentation is required after enrollment. Fine Arts applicants should separately audit portfolio and audition deadlines.
