AP Biology
What the AP Biology exam covers, how it's scored, the eight units it's built on, and how to practice your way to a 5.

AP Biology is a college-level introductory biology course and exam covering eight units, from the chemistry of life to ecology. The exam runs about 3 hours: a 60-question multiple-choice section and a 6-question free-response section, scored from 1 to 5. It's taken in May, and many colleges grant credit for a 3 or higher — confirm your target college's policy.
Practice, write, rehearse and review.
Four connected tools follow the same 8 units and exam structure.
Two sections, eight units
The exam splits evenly between multiple choice and free response, and questions are drawn from the eight units of the course.
60 questions, 90 minutes.
Discrete questions and sets tied to data, experiments and models — worth half your score. Reading graphs and interpreting results matters as much as recall.
6 questions, 90 minutes.
Two long-form and four short-form questions that reward clear reasoning, experimental design and data analysis — the other half of your score.
One 1–5 score.
The two sections combine into a single 1–5. A 3 is "qualified"; a 4 or 5 is strong. Credit policies are set by each college — confirm yours.

What AP Biology covers
- Unit 1 — Chemistry of Life
- Unit 2 — Cell Structure and Function

How to study for AP Biology
- Practice one unit at a time, then mix units like the exam does.
- Drill the free-response — especially experimental design and data analysis.
- Learn to read graphs and tables quickly; the exam leans on them.
- Review every miss until the concept, not just the answer, is clear.
- Sit timed sets to build pace across both sections.
