Three things to weigh
The best test date isn't just the next one — it's the one that gives you prep time and a fallback.
Leave enough runway to be ready.
Most students prep for two to three months. Count backward from a date so you arrive with full-length mocks behind you, not cramming the week before.
Register before the cutoff.
The regular deadline is usually about four weeks out; a late window runs to roughly two weeks before for an extra fee. Test centers can fill, so register early.
Plan for a second attempt.
Many students test twice — often spring of junior year, then fall of senior year. Pick a first date that leaves room for one more before applications are due.
Count down to your date.
Set your test date in PrepScore and the dashboard plans backward from it — what to do today, this week, and before you sit.
Work backward from applications
Start from your earliest college application deadline, then leave time for scores to post (about 13 days) and for a possible retake. For most seniors that means a fall date with a backup later in the term; for juniors, a spring date that sets a baseline and leaves the whole next year to improve. Aim to have at least one full-length mock under your belt two weeks before you test.
